Safety precautions

Unfortunately girls, we are the main targets for criminals most of the time (because they think that we are weak). So if you need to go to somewhere, let your family and your friends know:
(i) when you will be back home
(ii) how you are getting there and back
(iii) with whom you are going
(iv) how to contact you

This makes it easier for your friends and family to notice if you are missing.
Confirm your plan with people involved.

Sometimes we cause our own problems. Don't advertise yourself as a sucker waiting to be mugged.

Plan the driving route before you go. If you are driving alone at night, especially in Cape Town, drive on the N1 not the N2; the N2 is more dangerous.

Don't advertise yourself

You have to admit that the cell phone is a very impressive invention when it comes to safety, so take it with you anywhere you go.

Remember to recharge the battery before you leave the house or bring an extra battery . If your cell is "pay-as-you-go", bring a brand new phone card with you. Just in case you need to phone someone in an emergency.

Don't display your cell phone and especially don't leave it inside your car. Someone may break the window to steal it.

Also, keep in mind the new law forbidding you to speak on your phone while you are driving. We recommend that you pull over to talk if you don't have a hands-free kit, or else miss the call and call back later when you've parked.

Miss the call and call back later

Make sure that you have at least 1/3 petrol inside the tank. Keep your car in good condition by getting it roadworthied every so many years or so many kilometres. Otherwise you may get stuck in the middle of nowhere with nobody to help you. (next ... Be aware of your surroundings)
