'What?
Go to South Africa? No way! It is not safe there at all!' All the comments above are not only heard from foreigners, but also can be heard from South African lips. So girls, be careful while you are walking down the street, and especially, while you are driving your car. A motherly piece of advice (no really, this does come from my mother, which means it is either useful or paranoid) - when driving around Johannesburg at night, wear a hat/beanie. This will disguise you as a big strong superman with gun and/or martial arts skills, and immediately put off would-be attackers. 'What?
Go to South Africa? In this section, we are going
to inform you how to avoid being robbed, hijacked, and even being raped
while on the road
This advice does not only apply in South Africa,
but also elsewhere in the world.
Helpful phone numbers --- The emergency number in South Africa is 10111. If you need help on UCT campus, phone Campus Control, because they'll get there quicker than the police. Safety precautions --- Avoid travelling alone, and let your family know where you're going. If you have a cell phone, keep it with you at all times. Your petrol tank must always be at least a third full. Be aware of your surroundings --- Take note of the people in your vicinity. Dealing with robbers and hijackers --- Don't open your window wider than 5mm. If you're defenseless, do what the hijacker tells you to.
