Dead battery: Jumpstart
You will need the assistance
of another car, and "jumpers". These jumper cables are easily
obtainable at a supermarket.
1. Pull the two cars alongside
each other, or with bonnets facing each other. Make sure they don't touch.
2. Both vehicles' handbrakes must be up. Put the gears in 'park' or 'neutral';
turn off both ignitions.
3. Connect one jumper cable from the positive terminal of the dead car
to the positive terminal of the live car. (The positive terminals are
normally red.) The terminals are also marked with plus and minus signs
(positive and negative).
4. Connect the (usually black) negative terminal of the live car with
the other cable to an unpainted bolt (the engine block) on the dead car's
engine, away from the battery. Make sure that the cables are away from
all fans, belts and pulleys.
5. Immediately start the live car, and then the dead one.
6. Allow the car to run at a fast idle for a few minutes before disconnecting.
7. Remove the cables in the reverse order of the way you attached them.
8. Drive the car for at least half an hour to recharge the battery.
9. NB: When you take off the jumper leads, your car must still be running.
10. NB: Be careful to take them off separately, not touching each other
(else you'll electrocute yourself!)
